The Carbon Suite In partnership with Michelle Delebet from Corporate Growing Pains, the Carbon Suite was launched in September, 2014. Carbon Suite was an initiative to communicate the financial risk of the Carbon Bubble to fund managers and others in the investment community. The Carbon Bubble is the idea that fossil fuel share-prices are massively overvalued because the market has not priced-in the fact that most of the fossil fuel reserves listed as assets on their books cannot be burned if the world is to stay below 2 degrees Celsius, as per the Paris Agreement. So the story goes, when the market wakes up to this so-called unburnable carbon, fossil fuel share prices will collapse creating a global financial crisis like the GFC-times-100. |

All-Safe Energy Efficient Products In 2008, through SEA O2, Guy undertook a sustainability audit for All-Safe, a retail chain specializing in energy efficiency products for homes and businesses—including ceiling insulation, solar PV, solar hot water, and skylights. The audit calculated the carbon emissions from electricity, fuel, and air travel for three of the eight Queensland stores. It also considered the carbon reductions in the community resulting from the energy-efficient products sold by All-Safe. The results showed a significant reduction in community carbon emissions associated with the presence of All-Safe stores. |

Carlyle Gardens Through SEA O2, Guy assisted publicly listed companyPrime Trust in expanding the Carlyle Gardens retirement village in Townsville. The village was growing from approximately 350 retirement homes to a total of 700. SEA O2 provided guidance on improving the sustainability of the new homes. As a result, five energy efficiency measures were mandated: – Light-coloured roofs SEA O2 estimated that these initiatives would reduce energy demand and CO2 emissions by approximately 50%. The image highlights the stark contrast between the light roofs of the new development and the older buildings. In the tropics, a light-coloured roof is the first line of defence against the intense sun. Unfortunately, the Global Financial Crisis caused Prime Trust to collapse, and construction was halted after only a handful of homes were built. |

Climate Change in Townsville SEAO2 was commissioned by Creek to Coral to investigate the projected impacts of climate change on Townsville with a view to how this would impact regional water quality. We found that capital cities of Australia had been modelled for climate change but not Townsville, and so we advised our client to commission CSIRO to run a climate change model specifically for the City. With this report in hand, we were able to interpret the data into layman's language and working with the water quality team determine water quality impacts for 2015, 2030 and 2070. Greenhouse Challenge Guy's first freelancing job was with a Commonwealth Government program called the Greenhouse Challenge. Guy's role involved enrolling businesses into the program and conducting carbon audits on their operations. He then negotiated Co-operative Agreements with firms on behalf of the Government. This work was undertaken via the North Queensland economic development body, Townsville Enterprise. Through this program, Guy conducted carbon audits for:
This was a great job, involving trips to the reef. It was during this period that the name SEAO2 was coined, a play on words between the sea and CO2. |

• The Hutchinsolar Experience: SEA O2 developed a website to communicate the project and on numerous occasions led school groups into the building allowing the children to see a green office actually in use. The venue was also used on a number of occasions to stage media events relating to solar power. • Green Building Advisory: SEA O2 advised Hutchinson Builders on green building elements for their Townsville HQ. This involved SEA O2 working with the hydraulic, electrical and air-conditioning engineers and included water tanks, lighting, air conditioning, white roof paint and solar PV. The service helped create the venue as an interpretation center for solar power and energy efficiency in an office environment. • Green Awards: SEA O2 worked on a submission for awards and Hutchinson Builders won two awards for the building — a TCC sustainability Award and one from Master Builders Queensland. • Solar Modeling: SEA O2 built a simple 3D model of Hutchinson's building in Google Sketchup and undertook solar modeling to ensure that the solar panels were located so as to not be shaded. • Media Management: SEA O2 wrote press releases and coordinated TV and print news stories about the Hutchinson project. This also included using Hutchinson's building as a venue for media news stories concerning changes in the solar power industry. |

reeFUEL biodiesel With business partner Mark Roberts, Guy Lane created reeFUEL biodiesel in 2006. reeFUEL imported Australian Standard Grade biodiesel from Brisbane to Townsville in B-Double 40,000 liter tankers. In Townsville, the fuel was retailed to the public and businesses including earth moving contractors and trucking companies. reeFUEL was the only biodiesel retailer in Australia to sell B100 or straight biodiesel, as all other biodiesel was sold as B20, a 20% blend with petroleum diesel. reeFUEL traded for about 8 months before falling petroleum oil prices and changes to fuel tax legislation made the business uncompetitive. Guy's role was marketing and sales and corporate communication, which included managing media such as print and TV, including the cover of CityLife journal. |

The Bio Boys is the title of an article about reeFUEL biodiesel — the biodiesel distribution company that Guy co-founded in 2006. The Bio Boys was the lead story in Townsville CityLife's September 2006 edition. Originally, Guy Lane and Mark Roberts were interviewed by a journalist working for the magazine. However, the original copy was deemed unsuitable, so Guy negotiated with the magazine editor to ghost-write the story. Guy's draft was subsequently accepted with just a few minor edits. The cover image shows Guy Lane and Mark Roberts posing with a borrowed red Peugeot 307. This vehicle was being run on reeFUEL biodiesel and was, at the time, one of the most carbon efficient production cars in Australia. |

Yellow Crane Runs on Greenpower In 2010, through SEA O2, Guy Lane worked with a property developer NMG Group that was constructing a three-story commercial building, 19 Stanley Street. Guy observed that the building site used an electric crane and so recommended that the building site be converted to Ergon Energy Clean Energy, a Green Power product. This allowed for the press release and subsequent TV news story: Yellow Crane Runs on Green Power. Pictured here, Guy briefs the journalist on how to interview the concreter who had been hauled off the building site as a talking head. |

At the time that this photo was taken the journalist asked the concreter how the crane was going since it was running on greenpower. Guy interrupted, pointing out that Greenpower was a contractual arrangement, and there was no reason why the performance of the crane would be any different. The journalist asked the question, regardless, and the concreter answered, "It's just fine. We haven't noticed any difference in the crane's performance." Guy's insight was that you'll often reach a wider audience if you let people tell the story their way. |

sustainability TODAY Between 2007 and 2011, Guy Lane delivered a fortnightly, four hour training session called sustainability TODAY to new members of the Townsville City Council Staff. sustainability TODAY covered big picture sustainability issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss and human population growth. The course also advised on how to implement sustainability ideas at home, such as through energy conservation, green purchasing, renewable energy and recycling. The name sustainability TODAY was pertinant as the content was driven by stories taken from the news of the day. Contact SEAO2 today to discuss training all your executives and staff in sustainability. |

Network Demand Management Pilot Through SEA O2, Guy assisted in Ergon Energy utility's Network Demand Management Pilot. This initiative sought to use Ergon's engineering skills 'behind the meter'. This means that Ergon works with some of its commercial clients to develop business cases and provide project management for energy efficiency improvements. Guy's role was to cold canvas prospective commercial partners and connect them with Ergon executives. |
